My poetry writing has been with me for 10+ years. At first, I just used poetry writing as a way to escape the world because I have had some challenges. As some people may or may not know, I was diagnosed with “hypotonia” or loose muscle tone. That meant I had to learn how to use my muscles to learn basic skills such as talking and walking. I felt like people didn’t always understand me so I put myself into my poetry writing.
It wasn’t until I was a little older that I realized that I really loved writing poetry. I remember one assignment when I was in 8th grade and I wrote about my grandma coming to San Francisco. I remember writing from her perspective. I gave it to my grandma and she loved it. I always credit Mr. Rose for encouraging me to write poetry.
Writing something, especially things that can get personal, can give a whole different perspective. I can write from my perspective or from the view point of someone else. Poetry is so freeing and liberating. There’s some form to it but not much.
